How to Avoid from Being Caught in A Common Gold Scam

Recently, I read an article about how Congo born, Dikembe Mutombo, an all-star NBA defender, was nicely scammed in a fake gold deal. Evidently, he and Houston based oil executive Kase Lawal were beguiled into believing that they could purchase around $30 million worth of the precious metal at a hugely discounted price to the prevailing global market price from dealers in the African country of Kenya. It just goes to show how even two intelligent men can be duped by what is such a common gold scam. I mean who wouldn't want to buy gold at a huge discount to the prevailing price, pick up the metal and then dump it onto some bullion dealer and get paid the market price thus making an absolute killing. This story inspired me to write about several common gold scams that have been around for a while and should be avoided. But, even though they may be well documented, there is a sucker born every minute. It is surprising how the lure of making quick easy money can fool any greedy, well intentioned individual.

Watch Out for Gold Investment Scams

With the price of gold rising steadily, as recently as this week, the popular mindset of its safety and value has been around since before the Gold Standard backed the U.S. dollar. But before you get in on the gold rush, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) wants you to beware of fraudsters looking to make a quick buck.

According to the FTC, complaints in the area of investment frauds, including precious metals, have increased sharply over the past three years. In 2011, the FTC fielded 7,657 complaints related to investment fraud, compared to 6,490 complaints in 2009.

Ghana Gold - Africa Investigates - Al Jazeera English

For the last two years, I have been studying the Ghanaian market for gold and diamonds.  I work with many gold and diamond buyers and Ghana is often  requested as a targeted region for purchasing gold.  I am going to keep this post short with only a few points with the purpose of offering guidance.  My comments are based on actual experience.

1.  It is best to travel to Ghana to buy gold.  Ghanaian mines in general, prefer to meet you in person and they prefer cash and carry deals.  Consignment deals will require some form of down payment.  This does not mean that the down payment is necessarily a scam.  You should however be very careful that you are dealing with a legitimate company registered with the government before considering any form of down payment.  Hire a lawyer when attempting a consignment deal.  It is your best protection. Again, cash and carry after the entire parcel has been tested in your presence by the proper government agency.  Bring security.
